This study investigates the role of project managers’ competency in the performance of Urban Productive Safety Net and Jobs Projects in the case of the selected public sector bureaus in Benishangul Gumuz Regional State. This research adopted a quantitative approach and descriptive and explanatory to assess the relationship between project managers' competencies and performance project. The data for the study was collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources of data were collected using a structured questionnaire from employees of selected public sector bureaus. The independent variables are project managers’ competency that measured by seven dimensions, team management, decision-making, honesty and integrity, communication, conflict resolution, leadership, and external relations. The dependent variable is the performance of public sector projects in selected public sector bureaus. The descriptive mean result indicated that while project management competencies are generally strong, especially in external relations and conflict resolution, the actual project performance dimensions are moderate and require further enhancement to ensure project performance. The correlation result led to the conclusion that all the seven project manager competency i.e., team management competence external relations, conflict resolution, leadership, honesty and integrity, decision-making and communication dimensions have a significant and positive relationship performance of urban productive safety net and job. Finally, the regression results indicate team management has a dominant effect on project performance. Therefore, emphasis should be placed on preserving and enhancing these key project managers competencies inputs, as their favorable levels likely play a critical role in driving strong project performance.
