THE ROLE OF RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS IN PROMOTING GOOD GOVERNANCE: THE CASE OF ASSOSA TOWN

Abstract:

This research examines the role of religious institutions in promoting good governance in Assosa town, focusing on three primary objectives. First, it assesses the practice of good governance by evaluating how these institutions contribute to ethical behavior, transparency, and accountability within the community. Second, it explores the influence of religious leaders on policy-making and public service delivery, highlighting their advocacy roles and impact on local governance. Finally, the study identifies the challenges faced by religious institutions in fostering good governance and proposes potential solutions to overcome these obstacles. Utilizing a qualitative approach, including observation, interviews, and focus groups, and secondary data sources like published and unpublished documents to gather relevant data. the research gathers qualitative data to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play. Case study research designs were employed to uncover the reasons and go deep into the selected cases, respectively. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select individuals who have sufficient knowledge in the area. The study employed thematic analysis to sort-out important themes of the data. Key findings indicate that while religious institutions play a significant role in promoting ethical standards and influencing policy, they face challenges such as political interference, resource limitations, and issues of community trust. The study concludes with for enhancing the effectiveness of religious institutions in governance, emphasizing the need for collaboration among stakeholders and the establishment of support systems to empower these organizations. This research contributes to the broader discourse on governance and the crucial role of religious entities in shaping ethical and accountable public administration. The study recommends as the all religious institutions should entertain ethno linguistic differences of the followers and cooperate with the government to the level expected of them. Additionally, the government should treat religious institutions found in the study equally and entertain religious institutions’ cases officially to maintain peace and harmony successfully.
