This study assesses the efficiency and development pathways of youth football projects in Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State and their impact on Ethiopia’s national football team. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and non-participant observations to collect data from players, coaches, sports administrators, and community stakeholders. Key areas examined included coaching quality, talent identification, infrastructure availability, and player development pathways. Findings indicate several challenges affecting the efficiency of these projects. Inadequate infrastructure, poor access to quality training facilities, and insufficient coaching were identified as significant barriers to effective youth football development. Limited financial resources further constrained program operations, restricting access to essential equipment and competition opportunities. Additionally, weak community engagement and gender disparities in participation highlighted socio-cultural barriers that require attention. Despite these challenges, the study revealed potential strengths, such as high player enthusiasm and grassroots-level engagement, which provide a foundation for future improvements. Recommendations include increasing investment in infrastructure, coaching education, and resource allocation to improve training conditions and player development. Enhanced community involvement, targeted outreach programs, and partnerships with local football clubs are suggested to foster inclusive and sustainable growth. Establishing structured pathways for talent progression and integrating life skills training into football programs were also emphasized to prepare players for success both on and off the field. The study offers critical insights for stakeholders seeking to optimize youth football initiatives, contributing to the broader goals of sports development in Ethiopia. |
